Two European entrepreneurs shared their vision of startup innovation on the opening day of Entrepreneurship Week at Stanford University, Monday.
Eirkur Hrafnsson, chief executive officer and co-founder of GreenQloud headquartered in Iceland, and Jan Rezab, CEO and co-founder of Socialbakers, based in the Czech Republic, spoke about ‘green’ geo-thermal powered cloud computing strategies and social media analytics.
Hrafnsson started by making the connection between cloud computing and green gas emission – basically, running “clouds” on renewable energy...

Chip maker Advanced Micro Devices has announced today that it is buying server startup SeaMicro for $334 million in a bold and surprising move to bolster its server business against long-time rival Intel. Global IT services provider CSC recently released a study on cloud computing, and I had the opportunity to talk with two of CSC’s executives about the study and the company’s own cloud offerings. You can see the study, titled CSC Cloud Usage Index, here.
Before sharing some of the interesting findings, let me point out that this was a pretty comprehensive study: it was conducted by independent research firm TNS, which surveyed more than 3,500 cloud computing users in eight countries. Small, medium and large private and public sector organizations were represented in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Brazil, Australia, Japan and Singapore. Interviews were conducted between October 2011 and November 2011. The goal, according to CSC, was to learn about outcomes and experiences regarding cloud, rather than predictions and intentions...
The IT industry may need to go on the offensive for better security, RSA executive chairman Art Coviello said on Feb. 28 at the annual RSA Conference. He said since the RSA experienced a breach, it has learned from the incident and made changes to help improve cloud computing and IT security.
“We are sharing and using them to drive strategy and investments and our product roadmap," Coviello told the crowd at the opening speech of the RSA Conference, according to the Register. "We hope the attacks on us will strengthen the urgency and resolve of everyone because we are not alone - we've never witnessed so many attacks by hackers.”...

Moving some aspect of your campus IT operations to the cloud won't eradicate your worries about that function. But a well-considered contract can go a long way to mitigating your concerns, according to Steve McDonald, general counsel for Rhode Island School of Design.
Since the typical cloud deal starts with a form contract from a vendor, it's essential that colleges and universities review it to ensure it reflects the actual business terms that have been agreed. Otherwise, "it likely will include only the vendor's standard terms, which probably won't be the complete deal and probably won't favor you," McDonald noted...
Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) allows businesses to sub-navigate IT through self-service deployment of applications in the cloud, putting the role of the CIO and the IT department at risk.
John Abel, chief architect for Oracle, told attendees at Oracle's Cloud Conference in London this week that CIOs need to be smart in ensuring that their role isn't jeopardised by the cloud.
"CIOs need to make sure that they are part of the business conversation early on. For the first time, thanks to cloud computing, the business is able to sub-navigate IT," said Abel. "Project control is becoming increasingly important for CIOs, because now the business thinks that it doesn't need IT and it can go and procure its own IT capabilities with SaaS."...
The Award was given by Cloud Computing Magazine, the authoritative source of news and articles for the global technology industry, which is published by TMC.
It is the first time that such an award, which gives recognition to companies that have most effectively leveraged cloud computing to bring new differentiated offerings to market, has been made. 2X Software in particular was identified as having demonstrated innovation, as well as the ability to improve the security of cloud environments, by the Award organisers.
2X Software is a privately-held global leader of desktop and application delivery, remote access and cloud computing solutions and has offices in the USA, Germany, UK, Australia and Japan apart from Malta. 2X is a highly-acclaimed innovator, whose products receive wide-spread recognition, and its customers include world-renowned organization such as Mazda, Harvard University, Fox News and many others...
I had the privilege of chairing the infrastructure track at last week's Cloud Connect conference. Three of the presentations were particularly interesting, offering a good perspective on just how dramatic an effect cloud computing is having on IT. Summed up, the capability and agility of cloud computing is forcing an extremely rapid evolution.
In a sense, these effects are akin to what would happen to an established living ecosystem were significant change to occur within. One could expect to see existing species be stressed by the development of new characteristics in the ecosystem, forcing them to adapt rapidly to survive. Those that fail to adapt will, inevitably, dwindle into extinction...
Writing on the Azure blog the firm's corporate vice president for service and cloud, Bill Laing, said while the firm had still to fully determine the cause of the issue, the extra date in the month appeared the most likely cause...
Many companies are just getting started with cloud computing, but others are already well entrenched. Indeed, some organizations in this latter camp have built massive private clouds that support significant portions of their operations.
These giant, multi-petabyte clouds present unique management challenges for CIOs and business leaders, including ensuring adequate security and service levels, and positioning the new cloud offering in such a way that internal customers want to use it. And because so much about cloud services is relatively new, organizations are learning to deal with the hurdles even as they deploy these mega-clouds. The biggest challenge in implementing private clouds is the massive culture and operating model shift from a 'do-it-for-users' model to a 'user self-service' model."...

Considering a move to the cloud for one or several of your key services? If so, you are not alone. Cloud computing is growing exponentially as more and more vendors are starting to offer services, and as more businesses are beginning to see the potential for cost savings as well as the ability to offer new services that were beyond their capacity. When moving services to the cloud, you are moving critical parts of your IT infrastructure and corporate information assets to systems that you will not have direct administrative access to. You will be relying on your vendor to provide security, auditing, and change management for these components, and will be relying upon them to secure your data.
Security in the cloud is very good, and in many cases the economies of scale vendors have at their disposal along with the specialized staffing means it will be better than what you could reasonably accomplish on your own, but you do want to make sure you understand all aspects of security in the cloud...
Zynga was once a big buyer of cloud computing services. Today, it's becoming a seller.
In 2009, when FarmVille started taking off--it grew to 10 million daily active users in six weeks, 25 million in five months--the company began to lean heavily on rented resources to handle the load. Zynga used Amazon Web Services, and over time, shunted more and more of the day-to-day load of running its games to AWS. By January 2011, AWS was handling 80 percent of Zynga's load. Only 20 percent was on servers that Zynga owned.
But at Zynga scale, using that infrastructure became inefficient, according to Zynga's CTO of infrastructure, Allan Leinwand, who I spoke with earlier in February. And by inefficient, he means expensive..
